Last month, Fairfax County was invited to participate in a roundtable by the University of Southern California's Center for Public Policy and Philanthropy to share what we have learned about effective ways to build and sustain strategic partnerships through the work of OP3 . Only five other jurisdictions were represented: Denver, Los Angeles, Newark, Michigan and Boston. Theresa Benincasa, Coordinator, Grants Research and Training Center, represented the County at this important event.

PARTNERSHIP PROFILE:
Fairfax County Law Enforcement Foundation

Our community faces challenges when the economy is strained, in the form of budget gaps and subsequent cuts of various support programs. The Fairfax County Law Enforcement Foundation helps to restore these valuable programs and through its commitment provides good opportunities for our citizens, who otherwise would not have access to these resources. The FCLE Foundation funds programs that provide training to victims of assault through the Women's Self Defense course, distribute child bicycle helmets to those in need, supports retired police service dogs, and assists the victims of domestic violence. These programs not only allow us to live safely, but also help create a more positive social environment for everyone. Celebrate Fairfax Young Professionals Mixer, a partnership between Celebrate Fairfax and OP3, offers a unique way to meet other young people with similar philanthropic interests. More than 10 local Chambers of Commerce and Civic groups will join together for a pre-concert meet-up where corporate social responsibility and civic opportunities will be discussed in an informal happy hour atmosphere. According to "Personnel Today", more than one-third of respondents to a recent survey conducted by said that working for a caring and responsible employer was more important than the salary they earned. Mixers like this offer shared value as the professionals can network, as well as share valuable opportunities with each other.

Tickets are $25 and are available through local chambers of commerce. Following the mixer (5-7p on June 8) participants will have the opportunity to hear the sounds of "Flavor Flav and the Legends of Hip Hop" on the center stage. For more information contact OP3

Mike Cantrell's grandmother, Gay Bowers, held a Christmas Party each year to benefit kids in need. Mike continued this tradition, but increased it to a scale that benefits hundreds of at risk youths and families each year. For more than 15 years Mike Cantrell, who is a criminal defense lawyer in Fairfax, holds a party for his family, friends and business associates where the ticket to get in is a new unwrapped toy. Prior to the party he visits local businesses to request donations of gifts/money. It's not unusual for 75 to 100 brand new bicycles to be displayed in the front of the party site. Mike gives the gifts to the Police Department and then takes the monetary contributions to the Friends of the Juvenile Court. For this unselfish, continued act of kindness, Mike was honored as OP3's Finalist for Small Business Champion. Mike says youth have a special place in his heart and he specializes in thier type issues. To contact Mike call 703.691.2470.
