community connections mixer

Bennett speaks to a group of children in Jinja, Uganda. Brittany was an associate at OP3's Grants Research and Training Center and helped numerous nonprofit organizations search and find grant funding for their organizations and coordinated our young professionals initiatives.

OP3 NEWS:
Brittany Bennett Heads to Uganda for Cultural Study

Brittany Bennett will soon leave OP3 for an amazing one year assignment. As one of two selectees for a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year she will conduct research in cultural anthropology, law, and human rights at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Given that one of her career aspirations is to be an international human rights attorney, her year in Uganda will enable her to experience a diverse mix of students and cultures that will further this goal. While abroad, she expects to commit to community service projects that raise awareness and improve education for females. Congrats Brittany! OP3 will miss you.

REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), is a national retailer providing quality outdoor gear and clothing. Their mission is "to inspire, educate, and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship." Their dedication to the outdoors runs deep. It is backed up by a comprehensive stewardship program that engages members, customers, employees and the broader community in caring for public recreational lands to ensure that these outdoor places are available for current and future generations.

In Fairfax County, REI has been an important partner and supporter of various organizations. REI's grant program has been instrumental in the success of the Park Authority's "Take Back the Forest" by providing two grants totaling $25,000 in the last two years. Additionally, REI partners with Fairfax County Parks, such as Riverbend, E.C. Lawrence, and Lake Accotink, on stewardship projects and recreational events. They have also donated bicycles to the Park Foundation for Culmore Multicultural Day. REI partnered with the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District on its NEST program.

Their continued support both with grant funds and volunteers have made a qualitative difference in our County. The Invasive Management Program (IMA) was able to engage over 700 volunteers of all ages during "Take Back the Forest." These volunteers worked on projects that are helping to restore over 40 acres of irreplaceable habitat in parkland. To join REI on an upcoming service project, check out their local store website at REI.com/Fairfax.

A big salute to REI for all their work in Fairfax and around the country.
