Literacy Council of Northern Virginia

Literacy Council

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (LCNV) teaches English to adults struggling to get by with little to no English-language skills. Through its Destination Workforce® program, LCNV works with business partners to provide intensive on-the-job English classes, encouraging employees to participate more fully and confidently in the workplace. LCNV's most recent Destination Workforce® class, created in partnership with Crowne Plaza Tysons Corner-Mclean, was made possible through a relationship established by Fairfax County's Office of Public Private Partnership, Tysons Partnership, and B.F. Saul Company Hospitality Group. Each Destination Workforce® course is developed with businesses, which contribute workplace-related content and course goals. Destination Workforce® ensures that employees have the English they need to perform better and advance in their jobs while improving business productivity and customer service.

For Crowne Plaza's Destination Workforce® course, LCNV developed a curriculum around the B.F. Saul Company Hospitality Group's "Our Big 3", a promise to deliver remarkable guest service in the paradigm of the hospitality industry. This focus shaped lessons in which employees learned to communicate with exceptional customer service using housekeeping and banquet-specific terminology. Employees in the course worked hard during each class to continue their commitment to this promise through the power of English language. For their part, Crowne Plaza shined in its commitment to employee development by providing on-site classroom space, paying employees for their time in class, and even serving lunch to all participating team members and LCNV instructors!

At the conclusion of the class, 13 employees were recognized for their hard work and advancements in their English literacy. Crowne Plaza supervisors also celebrated the increased confidence of their team, leading to improved customer service. LCNV applauds the team's accomplishments and looks forward to continuing our collaboration with these dedicated partners.
