SySTEMic Solutions

SySTEMic Solutions is the STEM outreach program for Northern Virginia Community College and they are passionate about developing a pipeline of student-centered activities from elementary school to career, building the STEM workforce of the future in the process.

The core underpinnings of a competitive economy are the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and Northern Virginia faces a critical shortage of scientists, engineers, and technicians. SySTEMic Solutions is facing this problem head-on by engaging students with exciting STEM programs early in their education, supporting their progress through high school and preparing them for a satisfying STEM career in college and beyond. Fairfax County is a partner is this initiative and has engaged and trained staff at twelve Computer Learning Centers and Clubhouses offering students in underserved communities a chance to participate in a Robotics Team and the STEM Engineering Challenge.

NOVA, through SySTEMic Solutions, has developed a collaborative arrangement among school divisions, higher education institutions, and employers to create a sustainable workforce pipeline in Northern Virginia that will have 40,000 students preparing for STEM careers in 2016.

Various activities, such as summer STEM camps, competitive robotics, and STEM dual enrollment are being delivered to participating teachers and students, and are built upon the critical need for a hands-on, activity-based approach to learning science, technology, engineering and math through the integration of innovative teaching methods

Ways to Give

  • Won the 2014 Governor's Award for Science Innovation.
  • Recently launched a Dual Enrollment STEM Academy for High School Juniors and Seniors to get college credit while still in high school.
  • Enrolled over 1000 students in our 2013 summer STEM robotics camps.
  • SySTEMic Solutions began 'fueling the STEM pipeline' in 2010 in Prince William County. Now the program has expanded across Northern Virginia.
  • Most students in the program are first generation college-goers, many coming from moderate or lower income families.
SySTEMic Solutions has been a boon to local technology and research companies, who are dependent upon a highly skilled workforce and recognize the lack of STEM funding in the region. Corporate partners, which include Micron Technology Virginia, Aerojet RocketDyne, and BAE Systems help fund programs and educate students about job opportunities. Chambers of Commerce in Arlington, Dulles, Fairfax, Greater Reston, Loudoun, Prince William, and the Northern Virginia Technology Council signed resolutions of support for the program.
